Search has changed. If you've used tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Google’s AI Overviews lately, you'll know that we no longer just look for a list of links.

We want a direct answer. For small businesses, this shift has created a new digital marketing discipline called answer engine optimisation (AEO).

While traditional SEO focuses on where your website ranks in a list, AEO focuses on making sure your business is the one the AI chooses to quote. If an AI engine provides a detailed answer but doesn't mention your brand, you're effectively invisible to that user.

What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation is the process of structuring your online content so that AI-powered "answer engines" can easily find, understand and trust your information.

The goal isn't just to be on page one; it's to be the specific source that the AI cites when a customer asks a question.

AI models don't just "guess" answers. They synthesise information from across the web. AEO ensures that when they look for an expert in your niche, your business provides the clearest, most authoritative data available.

Why AEO matters for small businesses

You might think that AI search only benefits the big players with huge budgets. Actually, it's quite the opposite. Answer engines prioritises accuracy, clarity and directness over brand size.

  • Visibility without the click: Many users now get their answers directly from the AI interface. If your brand is cited as the source, you're building trust and brand awareness even if the user doesn't visit your site immediately.

  • Levelling the playing field: Small businesses often struggle to outrank global corporations for broad keywords. However, by answering specific, "long-tail" customer questions better than anyone else, you can become the go-to source for AI engines.

  • Higher quality leads: When someone does click through from an AI answer, they're usually much further along in their decision-making process. They've already had their initial questions answered and are looking for the specific expertise you provide.

How to optimise for answer engines

If you want your small business to show up in AI responses, you need to change how you approach your website content. It's no longer about "keyword stuffing" but about "answer providing".

1. Use a conversational structure

Answer engines are built on natural language. Use headings that mirror the exact questions your customers ask. Instead of a heading like "Our Plumbing Services", try "How do I fix a leaking tap in an emergency?".

2. Give the answer first

Don't make the AI (or the reader) hunt for information. Use the "inverted pyramid" style of writing. Provide a clear, concise summary of the answer in the first two sentences of your section, then expand with the details later.

3. Use structured data

Think of schema markup as a translator for AI. It's a bit of code that tells engines exactly what your content is, whether it's a "How-to" guide, a product price or a business location.

Small businesses using FAQ and Local Business schema are significantly more likely to be featured in AI summaries.

4. Focus on "Information Gain"

AI models don't like repeating the same generic advice. They look for "information gain", which is new, unique or expert data. Share your own case studies, original photos or specific local insights that a generic AI couldn't find elsewhere.

Is traditional SEO dead?

Not at all. In fact, AEO is built on the foundations of good SEO. You still need a fast website, high-quality backlinks and a mobile-friendly design. Think of SEO as the engine that gets you into the race, while AEO is the strategy that helps you take the lead in the AI era.

For small businesses, the message is clear: if you aren't providing the best answers, your competitors will. Start by auditing your most important pages. Do they answer a specific question? Is that answer easy to find? If not, get in touch with us to start your AEO journey.
